The idea of coupons started in 1887 when the Coca-Cola Company decided to try different advertising techniques. Asa Chandler, a partner, encouraged employees and sales representatives to give out coupons for free drinks. The coupons were also mailed to costumers and placed in magazines. Coupon use became more widespread in 1909 when C.W. Post distributed coupons to help sell breakfast cereals and other products. In September 1997, the U.S. celebrated the first National Coupon Month.
Today customers can get coupons from various sources, including newspapers, the internet, web sites. Mobile phone coupons are becoming more widely popular, especially since 2010 when Target became the first national chain to put out mobile coupons. But maybe some have missed one of the sources of coupons—East Morgan County Library.
At East Morgan County Library we subscribe to an assortment of newspapers and magazines. In the newspapers and magazines is usually a generous supply of coupons. Instead of throwing them away, we pull them out and put them by the front desk. Anyone can come in and take any of the coupons. You don’t have to wait for National Library Month in September, feel free to come check out our coupons anytime we are open.
